Upcoming Events Target Existing and Emerging Companies

Collaboration and innovation will be showcased during two upcoming events supported by the Iowa City Area Development Group.  ICAD Group’s monthly coworking event, known as a Jelly, will be September 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the main conference room of the Iowa City Commerce Center at 325 E Washington.  Startup Weekend, a 54-hour business creation event, will be September 30 at the Pappajohn Business Building on the University of Iowa campus.

Startup Weekend has never been held in Iowa City.  This will be ICAD Group’s 11th coworking event.

“For this area to be recognized globally as a place for innovation and company growth, we must continue to catalyze connections between people, companies and ideas,” said Mark Nolte, Business Development Director for ICAD Group.  “Interaction and participation is what helps build ideas, and scalable ideas lead to companies and jobs.  Both of these events help do that.”

Startup Weekends engage innovators, makers and do-ers in a community to come together, pitch ideas, and work to build companies that solve real-world problems.  Tickets are $99; $35 for students.  For a complete agenda and to register, visit iowacity.startupweekend.org.

Jellys are casual drop-in cowork sessions that combine creativity and productivity. Attendees can focus on their own projects, see what others are working on and make new connections. There is no fee, no agenda and no registration. Coffee, wireless internet and electrical outlets are provided free of charge.

“Both of these events are targeted to existing industry, entrepreneurs and emerging companies,” added Nolte.  “Startup Weekend is open for any business idea that addresses an audience beyond just a local market.  For the Jelly, a lot of times new ideas are formed by the connections we help create.”

“In the end, both of these events allow anyone with an idea to work on a new platform, try a different business approach and let creative juices flow.”
