Iowa City Dedicates First New Iowa River Crossing Since the 1960s

McCollister Bridge now open

Construction is complete on the new McCollister Bridge and Boulevard, connecting Old Hwy. 218 to S. Gilbert Street. A dedication is planned for October 2, 2009, at 2 PM on the east end of the McCollister Bridge. Please enter McCollister Boulevard from South Gilbert Street and travel west to the bridge.

The opening of McCollister Bridge and Boulevard connects the previously improved South Gilbert Street and newly constructed Mormon Trek Boulevard extension. The completion of these projects provides an east-west arterial roadway connection across the Iowa River.

Iowa City's McCollister Bridge and Boulevard project was funded with a combination of resources including $1 million in City funds and $5 million provided by a SAFETEA-LU Federal earmark. The project includes approximately ¾ of a mile of Portland cement concrete paving, connecting the recently extended Mormon Trek Boulevard to the Iowa River on the west, and the Iowa River to South Gilbert Street on the east. The new 396' pre-cast concrete beam bridge spans the Iowa River and connects the new paving on the east and west. Other associated work included the construction of a 115' long single reinforced concrete box culvert, water main, storm sewer, fiber optic conduit, and wide sidewalks.
