IDT to Commercialize Small Synthetic Gene Products

Synthetic Genomics, Inc. (SGI), a privately held company commercializing and developing genomic-driven solutions to solve a variety of global needs, and Integrated DNA Technologies, Inc. (IDT), the world leader in production and supply of oligonucleotides, jointly announced that they have entered into an agreement to manufacture, market, and commercialize small synthetic gene products. The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Specifically, SGI and IDT will work together to construct custom, synthetic, double-stranded nucleic acids up to 5 kb.

West Liberty Foods, L.L.C., takes food safety training very seriously, and the company shares what it knows with the entire meat processing industry.

“We believe food safety is not proprietary,” says Kristine Knobloch, training and development supervisor for West Liberty Foods (WLF). “West Liberty Foods’ commitment to food safety benefits all consumers and companies in the industry.”

Founded in 1996 by the Iowa Turkey Growers Cooperative, the company began its comprehensive food safety training effort in 2002. West Liberty Foods had just opened a second plant in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and wanted to develop a mandatory food safety training course for the employees.

Iowa City Recognized as a Best Place for Kids and Retirees

Iowa City’s name has been included in two national “Best of” lists for two different populations. Forbes magazine named Iowa City among its twenty five “Top Places to Retire--And Work” and Livability.com released its list of “Top 10 Libraries for Children” and ranked the Iowa City Library number five.

ISE Helps Eliminate 9 Million Paper Forms with New Software

Southeastern Freight Lines, a provider of regional less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation services, has completed deployment throughout its fleet of Innovative Software Engineering’s (ISE) electronic driver vehicle inspection reporting (DVIR) application to enhance safety and productivity.

Over 14,000 compliant and paperless DVIRs are being generated and certified daily, the company says. The DVIR implementation will eliminate over 9 million paper based forms annually from being created, filed, stored, and purged.

Tennessee Coach Operator Selects Coralville’s ISE Fleet Services

While federal safety regulators and politicians wrangle over the issue of whether to mandate electronic onboard recorders for over-the-road buses and truckers, Greene Coach Company here has adopted the devises and placed them on all of its buses.

Greene becomes the first coach operator in the U.S. to install the ISE Fleet Services eFleetSuite EOBR solution across its fleet, and maybe the only operator in the U.S. to have totally trashed conventional logbooks.

New Manufacturer Operating in TEDCO Business Park

The first Powerlift Hydraulic Doors are being built at Stuefen Manufacturing’s new 10,000 square foot facility in the Tipton Industrial Park. The firm is a franchise of Rick’s Welding, Inc. of Lake Benton, Minnesota.

Owners Mike and Julie Stuefen relocated to Tipton last spring citing the city’s central location, business climate and quality of life. “Business is great,” said Mike Stuefen, “and the industrial park is a perfect location for us. It’s right in town but there’s plenty of room if we need to expand and we have easy access to I-80.”

The Tipton Economic Development Corporation (TEDCO) was the first economic development organization in the state to have its business park certified shovel ready through ICAD Group’s Shovel Ready Iowa program. The Stuefens had been leasing property in rural Tipton until completion this month of their new facility on the east end of the park.

ACCIONA Windpower to Supply Montana Wind Park

ACCIONA Windpower, a subsidiary of the ACCIONA Group with a plant in West Branch, has signed a contract with NaturEner USA, LLC to supply its 189 MW Rim Rock wind park in Montana. In addition to supplying the turbines, ACCIONA Windpower will manage the transport and the start-up of the wind turbines, as well as the operation and maintenance of the installation for seven years.

Rim Rock will have 126 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 1.5 MW and a rotor diameter of 77 meters. Delivery and installation will be carried out throughout 2012. Read the full story at www.icadgroup.com.

ACT is offering free webinars to help secondary and postsecondary educators and officials improve students' college and career readiness.

"The webinars will help educators and administrators better understand the many uses for data available from ACT's assessments and ACT's five-plus decades of research," said Paul Weeks ACT vice president of Educational Services. "Attendees can use the webinar information to improve curriculum, advise students and apply district and statewide strategies to add rigor to the classroom."

ICAD Group Hires Janee Bradshaw as Fundraising Coordinator

The Iowa City Area Development Group has hired Janee Bradshaw to help coordinate its new, five-year campaign. The campaign, based on ICAD Group’s 2030 Vision, will generate funding for ICAD Group programming for the next five years.

Bradshaw recently moved to the region from Louisville, Kentucky, when her husband was named Director of the Eastern Iowa Airport. Prior to this role, Bradshaw worked as Administrative Coordinator for the Louisville Metro Government, including event coordination for the Mayor’s office. Bradshaw and her husband have a daughter, Jessica, who is a freshman at St. Louis University in Missouri.

Bradshaw will assist the staff of Funding Solutions of Austin, Texas, for the next six months as ICAD Group conducts its Vision 2030 fundraising campaign.

Delta Adding Second ATL Flight at CID

Delta Air Lines is adding a second non-stop flight from The Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) to Atlanta (ATL) starting March 2. The new flight departure time out of CID is 10:30 a.m., arriving in ATL at 1:25 p.m. All flight times are local.

Delta first started the Atlanta service out of The Eastern Iowa Airport in June 2006. When Delta merged with Northwest Airlines, the carrier made various changes throughout its system and CID’s Atlanta service ended in August 2009.

In August 2010, Delta brought back the ATL service with one daily flight on a 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet. The flight has been doing well, with an average load factor of 88%, according to airport representatives.
