Learn How to Master LinkedIn as a Networking Tool

Social media plays an important role for job seekers and recruiters, but many don’t know how to navigate the world of networking online.  The Iowa City Area Development (ICAD) Group and Iowa Workforce Development are presenting a workshop on using LinkedIn on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Coralville Public Library.

The event is free and does not require preregistration.

The 60 minute workshop, titled “Using LinkedIn to Develop Your Network and Career” will be held in the Schawb Auditorium and will be hosted by Margie Peskin, a job search coach and resume writer for Search Forward, and Mark Hennessey, lead technical recruiter for Vangent Corporation’s healthcare solutions.

Mark Hennessey says LinkedIn is one of his primary recruiting sources for Vangent Corporation.

“LinkedIn has become the single best tool in searching for potential candidates as well as networking with other recruiting professionals,” said Hennessey.  “Those looking for jobs have to act competitively and LinkedIn gives them an edge.  If you’re not using it, I guarantee another qualified candidate is and will beat you to the potential job.”

The workshop is unique in that attendees can hear perspectives from the job searching side as well as from the recruiting side.  No matter the side, Peskin says networking is a must for career success, and contacts can lead to new opportunities.  “A key networking objective is to identify contacts who the other person knows that can help expand your network.  This can easily be accomplished using LinkedIn and we’ll help show you how.”

This workshop is part of ICAD Group’s ongoing programming in helping train and retain area workforce.  ICAD Group addresses regional workforce challenges with strategic programs and partnerships to help our area remain economically viable.  Workforce development services are provided to investors, clients and the Iowa City area in five key areas:  Guidance, Retention, Education, Attraction, and Training for businesses with or without HR staff and departments.
